What were (are) Prophets?

Prophets in the Old Testament were covenant messengers of God. The prophets were sent (Hebrew word shalach: apostello were we get the word apostle meaning sent one) to call Israel back to covenant, and to warn them of covenant wrath coming for covenant violations. Their words were a covenant lawsuit (Isa 34:9) charging Israel with covenant violations. God was stating his case through the prophets and waiting for a response (see Jonah). The response was either repentance or rebellion, with messengers often being killed. Refusal to repent meant covenant wrath would be released. The killing of prophets required the justice of God in avenging their blood. The Prophets also pronounced Judgements upon wicked nations surrounding Israel showing that he is the God of all the earth!
