Paul emphasizes the fact that we are justified by faith and not by works of the law. The greatest challenge to the early church was misunderstanding of the law and justification. Justified means to be declared righteous. Paul uses Abraham as the example of a man justified by faith apart from the law, which came after Abraham through Moses. The Gospel must be believed in order for a person to be saved.
Paul declares the entire world is guilty before God. The Jews were guilty because of the law. Justification is only by faith, and not the works of the law. Paul also explains that all physical Israel is not the true Israel. Many Jews were in unbelief, by the remnant but the remnant was being saved. (Rom 9:27) God’s plan for Israel’s salvation was always to the remnant, and not to all the physical seed of Abraham. Paul emphasizes the elect being saved.
Paul discusses the blindness if Israel and the fullness of the Gentiles, and the salvation of Israel.
The word faith is mentioned 35 times in the book of Romans.
